Changing course in Australia may look simple, but it can affect your student visa if not handled properly.
Many students change because of fees, location, career interest, academic difficulty or dissatisfaction with the provider. But before changing, you should ask: Will this affect my visa compliance or future application?
Why Course Change Needs Care
Your student visa was granted based on a particular study plan. If the new course is not aligned, it may raise questions later.
For example:
CoE Is Critical
Home Affairs states that evidence of intended study must be provided to make a valid student visa application, and unless in a special category, applicants must provide a Confirmation of Enrolment for all intended courses when applying.
For students changing courses, the Confirmation of Enrolment and timing of enrolment become important.
Onshore Student Visa Applications
From 1 January 2025, Home Affairs stopped accepting Letters of Offer from people applying in Australia for a Student visa.
This makes proper enrolment documentation even more important for onshore planning.

When Course Change Can Make Sense
A course change may be reasonable if there is a genuine academic, financial, career or personal reason. The key is to document the reason properly.
Final Word
Changing course is not just an education decision. It can become a visa decision too.
